Notably, the track showed a slight northward kink as it approached Luzon, Philippines. After making landfall in Luzon at 16:30 on December 14, the typhoon continued westward across the South China Sea. After entering the South China Sea, its movement slowed markedly and the track turned more northward. From December 16 to 17, it remained near 14.1°N before shifting slightly south to 13.7°N, while continuing westward to 118.8°E, ultimately weakening and dissipating over the western waters of the South China Sea. The track showed no sharp loops or major turns and was relatively smooth.

After making landfall in Luzon, Melor’s intensity rapidly declined due to terrain friction and land-sea thermal differences. By 20:00 on December 15, it had weakened to a severe typhoon (42 m/s), and after entering the South China Sea it weakened further into a tropical storm, eventually becoming a tropical depression by 08:00 on December 17.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 2015 Melor’s peak intensity (930 hPa, 55 m/s) fell between the 2009 Melor (910 hPa, super typhoon) and the 2003 Melor (980 hPa, severe tropical storm). Although its minimum central pressure was higher than that of the 2009 cyclone, it was far stronger than the 2003 system, showing that this named cyclone series has a climatic background of high-intensity typhoon formation in certain years.
