Its track then made a notable turn. Beginning on October 6, the typhoon’s movement gradually shifted from northwestward to due northward and then northeastward under the influence of the mid- to high-latitude westerlies. From October 7 to October 9, the system accelerated northeastward, with its longitude increasing rapidly from 130.8°E to 147.8°E and its latitude jumping northward to 42.2°N. Throughout its entire lifetime, the typhoon made no landfall and remained over the ocean before weakening and dissipating in high-latitude waters.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Melor’s intensity evolution went through three stages: rapid intensification, a prolonged peak, and gradual weakening. Starting as a tropical depression, the system intensified into a typhoon within 48h and reached its peak at 20:00 on October 4, with a minimum central pressure of 910hPa and maximum winds of 65m/s, making it a super typhoon.
