Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Chan-Hom’s intensity followed a pattern of strengthening, fluctuation, explosive intensification, and weakening. It began as a tropical depression and rapidly intensified into a typhoon. A marked weakening occurred on July 4, with wind speed falling to 23 m/s and pressure rising to 992 hPa, but it then reorganized under favorable conditions and continued strengthening. The main explosive-intensification phase lasted from July 9 to July 10, when pressure dropped sharply from 960 hPa to 940 hPa within 24 hours and maximum winds increased to 52 m/s, reaching super typhoon intensity. It maintained its peak intensity until the early hours of July 11, with a minimum pressure of 935 hPa and maximum winds of 55 m/s. After landfall, it weakened rapidly due to terrain friction and cold, high-latitude waters, with pressure rising to 985 hPa.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Chan-Hom in 2015 had significantly greater intensity. Its peak pressure of 935 hPa was far lower than the 965–970 hPa range recorded by the 2003, 2009, and 2020 storms of the same name, and it was substantially stronger than Chan-Hom in 2026, which reached only tropical storm intensity with a pressure of 990 hPa. This makes the 2015 storm the most energetic and potentially most destructive cyclone of the same name in recent years. Its exceptionally long lifespan and two landfalls also made its track more complex than the historical average.
