Today's Typhoon Overview
The northwestern Pacific remains unsettled in late October. Today, the CMA (China Meteorological Administration) continued to issue a blue typhoon alert as Typhoon No. 30, “CHAMPI,” maintained super typhoon strength while moving closer to southeastern China. As it approaches the 48-hour warning line, its subsequent track and combined effects with southward-moving cold air have become the top priorities for flood control and typhoon preparedness.
Analysis of Active Typhoon Conditions
“CHAMPI” is currently the only active typhoon at sea. At 5 a.m. today, its center was located at 17.7°N, 131°E, with a minimum central pressure of 910 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 65 m/s. It was moving west-northwest at 23 km/h.
According to the official forecast, “CHAMPI” will gradually approach the waters east of Taiwan and may reach the peak intensity of its lifetime. However, as it moves deeper into the eastern waters of China, its intensity is expected to decrease markedly due to factors including southward-moving cold air. By 5 a.m. on the 26th, its center is forecast to be near 31.8°N, 128.3°E, having weakened to a severe tropical storm.
Public Focus
Based on meteorological information from multiple sources, public attention is currently focused on two main issues:
First, uncertainty over the track. It remains highly uncertain whether “CHAMPI” will pass through Taiwan before making a second landfall in Fujian or turn northward. Its projected track is expected to become clearer on the 22nd.
Second, the combined effects of wind and rain. This typhoon coincides with a southward-moving cold wave, resulting in significant impacts from wind and waves. Fujian's maritime authorities have implemented suspension of maritime operations and construction in coastal areas including Ningde, Fuzhou, and Putian in response to the combined threat of typhoon winds and cold-wave winds. Strong outer circulation winds are also drawing considerable concern from residents in places including Wenzhou in Zhejiang, Nantong in Jiangsu, and Quanzhou.
Meteorological Defense Advisories
With a super typhoon approaching, vessels engaged in offshore operations should return to port and seek shelter promptly, while personnel on offshore platforms should evacuate as soon as possible. Coastal areas should reinforce structures that could easily be damaged by wind and properly secure outdoor items. In addition, because the combination of the typhoon and cold air will bring lower temperatures to some areas, the public should keep warm while guarding against strong winds and heavy rain.
Please refer to the warnings issued by the CMA and relevant local government authorities.
