Overview of Today's Typhoon Conditions

On the evening of October 20, tropical cyclone activity in the northwestern Pacific remained vigorous. This year's 30th typhoon, “CHAMPI,” maintained super typhoon strength over the sea and was gradually approaching China's coastal waters. Meanwhile, strong cold air from the north was advancing southward. The combined effects of the typhoon's warm, moist airflow and the cold air will bring complex wind and rain conditions, along with a sharp temperature drop, to eastern coastal China.

Active Typhoon Update: “CHAMPI”

At present, the center of Super Typhoon “CHAMPI” is located at 16.7°N, 133.8°E, with a minimum central pressure of 915 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 62 m/s. It is moving west-northwest at 24 km/h.

Based on current trends, “CHAMPI” will gradually approach the East China Sea and waters east of Taiwan. According to the official forecast, its center is expected to move to around 29.2°N, 124.9°E at 17:00 on the 25th, when it will weaken to a severe tropical storm. Its outer circulation will bring prolonged wind and rain to the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, and the coastal areas of East China.

Public Focus

In light of local meteorological developments, the public is currently focused on three main areas:

First, the storm track and potential landfall. “CHAMPI” has adjusted its track while moving, and Zhejiang, Fujian, and other areas are closely monitoring its subsequent path and whether it will make a direct landfall locally.

Second, emergency responses to the typhoon and its wind and rain impacts. Shanghai has activated its Level IV typhoon emergency response, while some tourist attractions in Ningbo and other cities have closed early. Coastal and offshore operations face the threat of severe wind and rain, and flood-control and typhoon-preparedness measures are being implemented across the board.

Finally, the sharp temperature drop caused by the clash of cold and warm air. The collision of the typhoon with cold air has caused temperatures in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai to plunge, with temperatures fluctuating back and forth throughout the week. The public is paying close attention to protecting health during the seasonal transition.

Meteorological Editors' Safety Advisory

In the face of the combined impacts of “CHAMPI” and cold air, coastal areas must make adequate preparations. Offshore work platforms and vessels should promptly seek shelter from the storm, while Fujian and other areas need to continue arranging for fishing vessels to return to port and personnel to be evacuated. Residents of coastal East China should close doors and windows securely, properly secure outdoor objects that could be blown away, and guard against secondary hazards that may result from prolonged rainfall. In addition, with temperatures dropping sharply, everyone should add layers of clothing promptly and take precautions against colds.
