Differences in intensity standards
- China standards: Divided by 2 minutes average wind speed, up to 32.7 m/s for Typhoon .
- U.S. standards (Safel-Simpson and others): Divide hurricanes 1 to 5 by 1 minute average wind speed, Cat 5 corresponding to wind speed ≥70 m/s.
- JMA (Japan): Divided by 10 minute average wind speed, the standard overall is low.
Therefore, the same Typhoon, the Intensity rankings given by national agencies may be different, which is why this site provides the Multi-agency forecast comparison.
