Same Essence, Different Names
Typhoons, Hurricanes, and Cyclones are essentially all tropical cyclones. The only difference lies in the ocean basin where they occur:

Differences in Intensity Standards
- China Standard: Classified based on 2-minute average wind speed; a typhoon is defined as having winds reaching 32.7 m/s.
- US Standard (Saffir-Simpson Scale): Classifies hurricanes into Categories 1–5 based on 1-minute average wind speed, with Category 5 corresponding to wind speeds ≥70 m/s.
- Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA): Classifies based on 10-minute average wind speed, resulting in generally lower intensity ratings.
