Why Are Autumn Typhoons More Severe? The "Dangerous Combination" of Cold Air and Typhoons
Autumn typhoons from September to November are no weaker than those in mid-summer. Their tracks are more erratic, and once they combine with southward-moving cold air, wind and rain intensify significantly. Examples include Rammasun and Krathon.
Autumn Typhoons ≠ A Spent Force
Many people assume that typhoon season is limited to mid-summer. In reality, autumn typhoons after September are often more dangerous:
- Statistically, the proportion of super typhoons is higher in autumn than in mid-summer. By late summer and early autumn, the ocean has been heated throughout the summer, reaching peak sea surface temperatures and maximum energy reserves.
- Apart from Rammasun (mid-July 2014), other formidable typhoons such as Mangkhut (September), Meranti (September), Haiyan (November), and Krathon (October) occurred in late summer and autumn.
Three Dangerous Characteristics of Autumn Typhoons
1. Erratic Tracks
In autumn, the subtropical high retreats eastward and southward, while the westerly belt shifts southward. This creates complex and variable steering flows, making track forecasting the most difficult of the year. Sudden turns, looping near the coast, and binary interactions between two typhoons frequently occur in autumn.
2. Cold Air "Adds Fuel to the Fire"
The most unique threat of autumn typhoons is their interaction with southward-moving cold air:
- Cold air cuts in from the outer periphery of the typhoon, causing a sharp increase in the pressure gradient and doubling the range of strong winds. Even when the typhoon center is hundreds of kilometers away, coastal areas may already experience gale-force winds.
- The convergence of cold and warm air triggers extreme precipitation, with rainfall far exceeding that caused by the typhoon alone.
- A typical example is Fitow in 2013: although it was only at the lower end of severe typhoon intensity upon landfall, its combination with cold air caused widespread flooding in Yuyao City.
3. Sea Temperatures Drop, but "Momentum" Remains
Although sea surface temperatures near the coast drop in autumn, causing typhoons to weaken before landfall, it takes time for them to decay from their peak intensity. They still retain more than enough power to deliver a final blow.

- Do not let your guard down just because "it is already October." The typhoon season in Hainan and South China lasts until November–December.
- The warning window for autumn typhoons can be very short due to sudden track changes. Coastal residents should respond immediately to orange-level warnings or higher.
- Pay attention to forecasts for the "cold air + typhoon" combination. Under these conditions, the area affected by wind and rain is far larger than the typhoon's wind circle radius.
