Beginning March 28, its track made a significant turn. As its latitude increased rapidly, it moved northward before gradually turning toward the NE. After reaching the northernmost turning point near 20:00 on March 30, its track clearly shifted toward the ENE until it dissipated. Throughout its lifetime, it did not make landfall and remained over the open ocean. It finally weakened into a tropical depression at 14:00 on April 1 at 19.6°N, 145.8°E, ending the advisory cycle.

After its peak, Jelawat weakened rapidly. Beginning at 08:00 on March 31, environmental factors caused its intensity to drop sharply, with pressure rising above 950hPa and wind speed falling below 45m/s. By 08:00 on April 1, it had weakened into a tropical depression.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Jelawat in 2018 was exceptionally intense. Its record minimum central pressure of 920hPa and maximum winds of 60m/s far exceeded those of Jelawat in 2023 (tropical storm, 1000hPa), 2006 (tropical storm, 995hPa), and 2000 (severe typhoon, 950hPa). It was only slightly weaker than Jelawat in 2012 (super typhoon, 910hPa), making it one of the strongest Jelawat typhoons on record.
