Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Maria’s intensity evolved rapidly, remained strong for an extended period, and weakened before landfall. After developing into a severe tropical storm on July 5, the system intensified explosively into a super typhoon within 24 hours on July 6. Its central pressure dropped sharply to 925 hPa, while maximum winds reached 58 m/s. Notably, it maintained super typhoon intensity for four days from July 6 to 9, with central pressure remaining at or below 935 hPa, demonstrating a highly stable core structure.
