Typhoon Faxai Route Characteristics
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Faxai (2001年第25号) formed at Northwest Pacific低纬度海域, 初始Position位 at 4.8°N, 162.3°E. 在生命史初期 (12月15日至19日) , 该系统呈现显著的停滞少动特征, 经纬度变化极小, 主要维持在Tropical Depression至Tropical StormIntensity徘徊. 自12月20日起, 引导气流发生变化, Typhoon 开始 toward NW direction加速Moving, 并 at 12月21日 intensified into Typhoon 级.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Faxai’s intensity evolution went through three stages: gradual intensification, rapid explosive intensification, and rapid weakening. It took only about 58 hours to intensify from a severe tropical storm on December 20 (25 m/s) to a super typhoon by the evening of December 22 (55 m/s), while its pressure plummeted from 990 hPa to 930 hPa, indicating tremendous explosive intensity. On December 23, it maintained super typhoon intensity, with its minimum pressure falling further to 920 hPa and maximum winds reaching 60 m/s, its peak strength. However, as it moved into the middle- and high-latitude waters, environmental conditions deteriorated. From December 24, the typhoon weakened rapidly, downgrading from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon, with its wind speed halving within 48 hours before becoming an extratropical cyclone or remnant low.
Compared with later typhoons of the same name, the 2001 Faxai was significantly more intense. The 2014 Faxai peaked only at typhoon strength (970 hPa), while the 2019 Faxai reached severe typhoon strength (940 hPa). The 2001 Faxai not only reached the more powerful super typhoon category but also had a lower minimum central pressure (920 hPa versus 940 hPa and 970 hPa) and stronger maximum winds, making it the most intense and explosive of the three.
