Typhoon Angela (199521) began its life cycle over the Northwest Pacific at 08:00 on October 26 (10°N, 145°E) as a tropical depression. During its early formation, the system followed a pronounced west-northwestward track, moving rapidly from 145°E to near 137.8°E. From October 28 to 30, its center latitude fluctuated slightly between 12.1°N and 13.2°N while its longitude continued to decrease, indicating steady westward movement under the influence of steering flow. After November began, as the system approached waters east of the Philippines, its track curved slightly northward, gradually rising from 12°N to 14.5°N and shifting from a predominantly westward course toward a northwestward course. Throughout its lifetime, the typhoon made no landfall and finally weakened and dissipated over the northern South China Sea on November 7 (19°N, 107.4°E), remaining at sea throughout.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Angela underwent a typical cycle of rapid intensification, a brief peak, and rapid decay. After intensifying into a typhoon on October 31, it took only two days to strengthen from a typhoon into a super typhoon. On November 2, it reached its lifetime peak near 14.3°N, 126°E, with a minimum central pressure of 925 hPa and maximum winds of 60 m/s, establishing its status as a super typhoon. However, it maintained its peak intensity for only a short time. The next day, on November 3, its intensity dropped sharply to typhoon level, with winds of 35 m/s and a central pressure of 970 hPa, and it continued to weaken afterward.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Angela in 1995 was significantly more intense. Its 1992 namesake peaked only at typhoon level, with a central pressure of 960 hPa. The 1989 typhoon reached severe typhoon status with a pressure as low as 935 hPa, but still did not match the 1995 storm's extreme minimum of 925 hPa. The 1986 system reached only severe tropical storm intensity. The data show that Angela in 1995 was the strongest and had the lowest central pressure among typhoons with the same name during that period, demonstrating exceptional explosive intensification. However, changes in the surrounding environment later caused its intensity to collapse rapidly, and it did not directly affect land.
