Intensity evolution and historical comparison
The typhoon experienced rapid intensity changes, following a complete cycle of intensification, peak intensity and weakening. It began as a tropical depression with winds of 13 m/s and strengthened rapidly while moving westward. It developed into a severe tropical storm on October 8 and upgraded to a typhoon on October 10. From October 11 to 12, it reached peak intensity and maintained severe typhoon status, with minimum central pressure falling to 945 hPa and maximum winds reaching 48 m/s. The peak phase was brief, as the typhoon began weakening on October 13 and was downgraded to typhoon strength. It then further weakened into a severe tropical storm and a tropical storm while moving northeastward.
Compared with previous typhoons bearing the same name, Prapiroon in 2012 was significantly more intense. Its peak intensity as a severe typhoon with a central pressure of 945 hPa was much higher than that of Prapiroon in 2024, a severe tropical storm with a central pressure of 982 hPa; Prapiroon in 2006, a typhoon with a central pressure of 975 hPa; and Prapiroon in 2000, a typhoon with a central pressure of 965 hPa. Even compared with the stronger Prapiroon of 2018, a typhoon with a central pressure of 960 hPa, the 2012 case had lower central pressure and stronger winds, making it one of the most intense Prapiroon typhoons on record.
