Typhoon Ma-on Route Characteristics

Track Track and Turn toward characteristics

2011 No. 6 Typhoon “Ma-on” formed at the Northwest Pacific Ocean, Initial Position at 18.7°N, 155.5°E. In the early days of life, the system mainly presented a stable WNTrend. From July 12 to July 17, 02:00, its latitude slowly increased from 18.7°N to 22.8°N, and its length from 155.5°E to 136.3°E, indicating that the sub-tropical high-pressure S side of the guided flow was strong and stable.

The key turning point of the path appeared after July 17th. As the system N went to the middle latitude region, under the influence of the W-wind belt pre-airflow, the Moving direction changed significantly. Between July 17th 02:00 and July 20th 02:00, the Typhoon center length changed extremely slightly (136.3°E to 134.4°E), while the latitude jumped rapidly from 22.8°N to 33.7°N, showing a noticeable toward N acceleration characteristic. Then, from July 20th 20:00, the path showed a rare "return" or "NE fold toward" sign, the length E rapidly retreated to 142.6°E, and the latitude S dropped to 28.9°N, this later toward NE direction far away from land and gradually weakened the distraction character

Intensity Evolution and Historical Comparison

The system was rapidly intensified into Severe Tropical Storm within 32h after formed, and at July 14 evolved into Typhoon . Within about 54h of July 14 20:00 to July 17 02:00, Pressure dropped sharply from 955hPa to the minimum of 930hPa°E, max wind climbed to 55m/s, reaching the Super Typhoon level.

Tropical Storm.

Its lowest atmospheric pressure (930hPa) is much lower at 2022 "Ma-on" (970hPa), 2016 "Ma-on" (996hPa) and 2004 "Ma-on" (945hPa) . In 2016, the same name typhoon only reached Tropical Storm level, 2022 and 2004 typhoon and Severe Typhoon level, respectively, while 2011 "Ma-on" is the only individual to reach Super Typhoon level, showing that year Northwest Pacific Typhoon activity has a strong energy release characteristics.
