Typhoon Walt trajectory analysis
Track and Turning Characteristics
The key turning point in its track occurred from July 20 to 21. Before reaching its northernmost latitude, the typhoon peaked near 23.8°N and then continued northward to 27.1°N. Its track gradually shifted north and then northwest, making a pronounced turn near 29.4°N/136.5°E before curving west-southwest. It eventually entered the mid-latitude westerlies. The entire track remained over the sea without landfall, until it weakened and dissipated over the southern waters of Japan.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Walt underwent a complete cycle of formation, rapid intensification and decay. It remained a tropical depression for about three days, with winds of 15 m/s and a central pressure of 1004 hPa. After strengthening into a severe tropical storm on July 17, it entered a rapid intensification phase. In just three days, from July 17 to 20, its central pressure plummeted from 990 hPa to 930 hPa, while maximum winds surged from 25 m/s to 55 m/s, establishing it as a super typhoon. The 40 hPa pressure drop in such a short period reflected the explosive development of intense convection in its core.
After reaching peak intensity, the system weakened rapidly. Its central pressure rose to 955 hPa on July 21, while wind speed fell to 40 m/s; it weakened further into a severe tropical storm on July 22. Notably, from July 23 to 25, despite continuing to move northward to 32.2°N, it maintained winds of 25–30 m/s and a stable pressure of 980–985 hPa, demonstrating considerable resilience. It ultimately weakened to a tropical depression on July 26 and retained weak intensity near 33.5°N until dissipating.
Compared with the earlier typhoon of the same name, Walt (199104) in 1991 reached a minimum central pressure of 920 hPa, slightly lower than this case at 930 hPa. Both reached super typhoon status, but the 1994 Walt was slightly weaker at peak intensity and followed a track farther into the open ocean, causing no direct impact on land. Their differing tracks reflected variations in the atmospheric circulation patterns of their respective years.
