October 23 Typhoon Overview: Severe Typhoon “CHAMPI” Approaches East China

Today's Typhoon Situation Overview
As late October brings renewed activity at sea, the year's 30th typhoon, “CHAMPI,” continues to approach China's eastern coast. Under the combined influence of its outer circulation and core, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Shanghai, southern Jiangsu, and other areas will experience strong winds and heavy rain in succession. With autumn typhoons often following unpredictable paths and producing complex impacts, multiple regions have rapidly activated typhoon emergency responses and are fully prepared.
Current Status of Active Typhoon “CHAMPI”
As of today, the center of severe typhoon “CHAMPI” is located at 22.4°N, 123.9°E, with a central pressure of 950 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 45 m/s. It is currently moving northwest at 21 km/h. Over the next few days, its intensity is expected to gradually weaken due to the combined effects of cold air, falling sea-surface temperatures, and terrain. By the morning of the 27th, it is expected to weaken into a tropical depression. Its main area of impact will cover eastern Taiwan and extend further to Zhejiang, Shanghai, Nanjing, and other provinces and cities in East China.
Public Focus on Typhoon Preparedness
The public has recently expressed strong concern about the challenges posed by autumn typhoons. As cold air begins to become more active in the north, typhoons frequently combine with cold-air outbreaks, producing overlapping wind, rain, and storm-surge effects that significantly complicate defensive preparations. In addition, Taiwan has issued both sea and land warnings, as well as special alerts for strong winds over land, and several areas face the threat of extreme gusts. Shanghai, Zhejiang, and other locations are focusing on the risk of localized extremely heavy rain and urban flooding caused by the combined effects of wind, rain, and storm surge. Places such as Jiaojiang have activated Level III emergency responses, making coastal flood control a key priority.
Coastal and Inland Preparedness Guidance
As “CHAMPI” approaches, coastal areas should prioritize wind and wave protection, reinforce structures vulnerable to strong winds, and ensure that vessels engaged in offshore operations return to port in time to shelter from the storm. Although inland cities in East China are not directly adjacent to the sea, they should remain alert to urban waterlogging caused by short-duration heavy rainfall and to geological hazards in mountainous areas. Residents are urged to minimize unnecessary outings and stay away from billboards and aging trees.
Weather conditions can change rapidly. Please rely on the CMA and official warnings issued by local governments.
