Today's Overall Typhoon Situation

The northwestern Pacific is far from calm today, as this year's 30th typhoon, “CHAMPI,” continues to gather energy over the sea, maintaining its formidable strength. Meanwhile, cold air is moving south from the north. Over the next few days, the powerful combination of the “King of Wind” and the cold air will be the key factor shaping the weather across eastern China.

Current Developments of Active Typhoon “CHAMPI”

As of the evening of the 19th, the center of super typhoon “CHAMPI” was located at 14.6°N, 138.1°E, with a minimum central pressure of 915 hPa and maximum wind speeds of up to 62 m/s. It is currently moving west-northwest at 21 km/h. According to the latest official forecast, it is expected to continue advancing west-northwest, gradually approaching the sea east of Taiwan. By 5 p.m. on the 24th, its center will be near 27°N, 122.7°E, by which time its intensity will have weakened to typhoon strength.

Public Focus

Based on meteorological information from various regions, public discussion is currently focused on two main issues. The first is uncertainty over its track. Although “CHAMPI” is massive and its forecast track has shifted somewhat northward, whether it will make landfall along China's southeastern coast or turn north toward Japan remains highly uncertain. The second is the combined effects of wind, rain and falling temperatures. Residents of Zhejiang, Fujian and other areas are particularly concerned about the heavy rain, violent coastal winds and sharp temperature drops expected as cold air and the typhoon jointly affect coastal regions.

Coastal Safety Reminders

With complex weather on the way, vessels engaged in offshore operations should closely monitor the typhoon's movements and return to port in good time to avoid the wind. Southeastern coastal areas should prepare in advance for violent winds and heavy rain, and reinforce structures that may easily be displaced by the wind. In addition, the combined effects of cold air and the typhoon's outer circulation are causing sharp temperature fluctuations across many areas. The public should dress warmly when necessary and take precautions against the common cold.

Weather conditions can change rapidly. Please refer to warnings issued by the CMA and local government authorities.
