August 21 Typhoon Roundup: SAUDEL Strengthens as Rain and Wind Continue in South China

Today, the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea are in a complex situation marked by the activity of multiple weather systems. A distant tropical cyclone is gathering strength, while nearshore tropical systems are bringing continuous rain and wind to South China, making typhoon prevention and flood control a serious concern.
Analysis of Active Tropical Cyclones
Typhoon No. 18, “SAUDEL”
SAUDEL is currently a tropical storm, with its center located over the Northwest Pacific at 14°N, 149.5°E. Its central pressure is 990 hPa, and its maximum sustained wind speed is 23 m/s. It is moving north-northwest at 12 km/h. Because it will pass through an area with high sea-surface temperatures and low vertical wind shear, it has a strong potential for rapid intensification. According to official forecasts, SAUDEL is expected to reach approximately 26.8°N, 129°E in the early hours of August 26, when it will develop into a super typhoon. Its later track may bring it to China, Japan, or South Korea, so continued monitoring is needed.
Tropical Depression over the South China Sea
The system is located over the South China Sea at 20.3°N, 108.4°E, with a central pressure of 998 hPa and a maximum wind speed of 15 m/s. It is moving south-southeast at 7 km/h and is expected to reach approximately 20.5°N, 111.1°E in the early hours of the 25th while maintaining tropical depression intensity. Under the influence of the system and the monsoon convergence zone, heavy rain and strong winds are affecting coastal South China.
Public Focus
At present, the public is closely following SAUDEL’s peak intensity and ultimate landfall destination, particularly whether it will head directly toward China’s coast. The continuing heavy rainfall in South China has also raised widespread concerns, with rainstorm warnings issued in places such as Xiamen, Fujian, where localized rainfall totals have been substantial. In addition, typhoon blue warnings have been issued in Qinzhou, Guangxi, and Dongxing, Fangchenggang, with coastal residents actively preparing for flood conditions. Meteorological experts have also warned that relatively strong typhoons may move north in September. Coastal areas in northern China are beginning to monitor the progress of autumn typhoons.
